Hi! I'm Wendy, a Cambodian designer born and raised in New Zealand. When I'm not busy creating, you’ll likely find me spending time with friends and family, or diving into a cozy video game.
Design started off as a hobby for me, where I loved creating all sorts of media like posters, videos, and websites. I used to think design was all about making things look pretty, but over the past three years at the University of Waikato, I’ve learned it’s so much more than that. It’s about problem-solving, communication, and creating meaningful experiences.
This year, I had the amazing opportunity to intern at Farmlands, where I gained hands-on experience in Learning Design. I’m excited to share that this led to a job offer as a Junior Learning Designer! Moving forward, I hope my journey takes me deeper into the world of UI/UX design as I continue to grow and learn.
CitySprouts is a fun, interactive app that helps primary school students, teachers, and parents learn about sustainability. It gamifies eco-friendly habits through a virtual city-building game where students complete tasks like recycling, saving energy, and planting trees to grow their city.
Inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially around quality education and climate action, CitySprouts makes learning about the environment engaging and collaborative. Teachers can integrate sustainability into their lessons, and parents can get involved in progress tracking and take-home activities to help their kids grow (both their city and their green knowledge).
I focused on creating the mobile UI for parents to track their children's progress, monitor completed tasks, and encourage involvement in sustainability activities. Additionally, I developed the tablet version for students, ensuring that both interfaces are intuitive and engaging. I designed CitySprouts because I’m passionate about sustainability and believe kids can lead the charge in protecting our planet. Let’s plant the seeds of change—one virtual city at a time!
