Student Bio

Kamusta! I am Monica Gutierrez. I have been passionate about painting and drawing since I was a kid. I always had a paper and pencil with me, and I would draw dresses, houses and interiors of my house. This passion of mine led me to pursue the creative field.

University of Waikato allowed me to enhance my creative thinking and skills. At the start, I was scared to share my design work and get critiqued by people as I always thought I was not good enough to be a designer. As time passed, I gained a comprehensive understanding of software and design principles, which helped me to be more confident in sharing my work. Seeing my improvement from the first year made me appreciate my work more and be proud of what I've accomplished. Thanks to my lecturers and tutors who guided me throughout my time at University. Over the 3 years of my study, I enjoyed UI/UX design, illustration and branding.

Project Description

New Zealand consumes about 735 thousand tonnes of packaging every year and recycles only about 58% of it. Whereas, approximately 252,000 tonnes of plastic waste are disposed of in NZ landfills each year. Most of this is from supermarket packaging.

This is why I decided to start a project called ecoRise supermarket which focuses on plastic-free packaging. The purpose of this of this project is to educate people on the zero plastic alternatives as this would give them knowledge that there’s always a way/solution for not using plastic. Taking a little action for this kind of problem raises awareness and helps to prevent pollution by lessening the amount of new raw materials used.
