Student Bio

Hiya, I'm Maia, and my name also rhymes with papaya. I'm a nature-loving soul raised in a science-loving home that also likes to dabble in artistic endeavors from time to time. A lot of my growing up took place on the island of Bermuda, which is where my passions for environmental and artistic learning grew, until I chose to persue them in University. The combinations of my minors and major are intended to lead me into the field of science communication, which I feel is very important, and the type of project I have chosen to design for this capstone project.

Project Description

After three years of learning about myself as a designer I wanted to create a project that a.) was a type of product I loved learning about, b.) showed off my illustration skills, and c.) was a science communication piece. This illustrated species guide was developed to be a tool that locals or visitors to Bermuda could find around the island that would help identify various common species they might have seen, and provide some additional information about them that could pique their interest to learn more. The document includes a fold-out illustration which contains the 45 included species for this version. The guide is also a template for similar pamphlets containing a single class of animal, local plants, or species in other locations around the world. The perfect blend of science education and artistry.
