biography

Hey, I’m Salma Nicholson! I’m graduating with a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Media Design and minoring in Communication Design. I’ve always been a creative person, whether it be writing stories or creating art. However, my background in design was rather sparse. Entering the University of Waikato provided a well-rounded degree that allowed me to explore so many different facets of design.

Design is something that exists all around us, from what we see on our screens, to the books we read and to the way we interact. The Design degree at Waikato has provided guidance and exposure to all sorts of areas of design, where my skills have been created and refined. I never thought I would learn about so many different aspects of design, from user interface to making short films and creating varying graphics. Through these different opportunities, I have found that I enjoy the varying outputs of print design and illustration, as well as creating stories through film and motion graphics.

project description

The Passion Project expresses the musings and reflections of Emily Brook-Watt and Oliver Stewart, two Waikato creatives. Emily and Oliver express genuine stories and experiences in their individual documentaries of what passion means to them, and the struggles and triumphs that come with pursuing one’s passion. It is hoped that teenagers and young adults who are struggling to find a clear distinction in their lives would take on these stories in hope of finding a new perspective through the reassurance and motivation in which Emily and Oliver bring.
