biography
Hello! My name is Rheanna Kingma. I have a background in Marketing and Communications and will soon complete a Diploma in Design with a focus on Communication Design.
I initially completed a Bachelor of Management Studies (Hons) in Marketing and Public Relations in 2016. After working in communications for four years, I decided to pursue my passion for design at the start of this year. Design and communications go hand in hand and, for me, it’s impossible to think about one without thinking about the other. During my time at Waikato, I’ve learned essential design skills and had the chance to develop and challenge my design thinking. I’ve found that my areas of interest are branding, print design and poster design.
project description
Fashion production and consumption have reached unsustainable levels. Clothing production has doubled in the last 20 years and while we have more clothes in our wardrobes, we’re wearing these clothes less often and only keeping them for half as long as we did 15 years ago.
By Hand is a series of kits that encourages young women to extend the life of their clothing rather than throwing it away. As the largest consumer of fast fashion, By Hand is created for young women to teach and encourage them to repair, recreate or repurpose the clothing they already have and reduce their impact on the environment.
Mended by Hand is the main kit in the series and makes it easy for beginners to learn to sew and mend their clothes. The kit comes with all the essential tools and a how-to booklet with illustrated step-by-step instructions for everyday mending tasks making it as easy as possible to get hands-on!
