BIOGRAPHY

Hi there, I'm Yufeng. I'm studying a Graduate Diploma of Computer Graphic Design at the University of Waikato. I also have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering Management.
Before coming to Waikato, I’d been working in the gaming industry for a few years. While I was more focusing on the business side of the industry, I was often involved in game design, user experience design, marketing event design or web content planning. I really enjoyed the hands-on design work and the thinking process involved in it. That's why I decided to take professional courses at the University of Waikato to explore further in the field. I’m so glad that I made this decision as the study at Waikato has really laid a solid foundation for me to pursue further in the design territory. I can’t be thankful enough for all the help I've got from my teachers and classmates. It’s truly a wonderful experience that I’ll always cherish.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The surplus garden produce is a common sight in New Zealand. However, it's always a shame to see unattended ripe fruit or wasted abundance in the neighborhood backyards. In fact, fruit is the top wasted food in New Zealand as well as in the rest of the world. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of people are still in hunger. While many people are willing to share the surplus for free to others in need, few of them know where or how to easily share.

Fruibie is a mobile app I've designed to help people share or exchange surplus fruit instead of wasting it. It can easily connect individuals, food rescue organisations, charities, community food stands and food production facilities, so good edible fruit can reach the people in need instead of being wasted in the landfill. It would not only help minimize the waste or help the hungry, but also mitigate a series of chain reactions which include the CO2 those wasted fruit would produce in the landfill, eroded lands, increased water scarcity, loss of biodiversity, and the overall environment damage in the long run. Besides the obvious environmental impact, people would also be connected, building friendships once they started to share.
