BIOGRAPHY

Hey there, my name is Sam & I am a soon-to-be graduate at the University of Waikato. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Design, double majoring in Communication Design & Marketing. I enjoy communicating ideas visually through design, with my areas of interest being print, web and branding design.

During my time studying at Waikato, I have been fortunate enough to gain invaluable experience working in my field of studies. This has helped me to develop my knowledge and understanding of design, providing me with the opportunity to apply what I have learnt throughout my three years at university. I have also found it extremely rewarding working with clients to bring their ideas to life, utilising a mixture of digital & print mediums as a means of communicating their message.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

For my degree project I have developed a branding identity and design campaign for an organisation called Ecohome, striving to create awareness around sustainability in the local housing community. The purpose of this campaign is to create more sustainable housing environments, exploring the idea that we can make more sustainable living choices throughout all stages of our housing journey.

We have seen an increase in population and urban growth contributing to sustainability issues nationwide, with Hamilton’s population growing more than 30% faster than the national average. I found through my research that there is a lack of awareness around the benefits of sustainable living in New Zealand, with studies showing that we are largely unaware that having an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient home can have a significant impact on reducing our carbon emissions.

I created a design campaign for Ecohome to spread awareness around the benefits of sustainable living, with the main deliverable for this project being a multi-purpose A5 booklet which folds out into an A2 infographic poster. This deliverable highlights the importance of household energy-efficiency, which is intended to be part of a series of fold-out booklets covering additional sustainable housing issues, such as waste and material sourcing. To further develop the branding identity of my organisation, I created some mockup website designs to support my main deliverable and incorporate some digital design into my work. I also developed some additional print collateral to go alongside my design campaign, including letterheads and business cards.
