BIOGRAPHY

Hello! I am Sean Chua and I will soon graduate with a Bachelor of Design majoring in Communication Design and minoring in Supply Chain Management and Tourism Management. I have been interested in design ever since I was young and decided Waikato was the perfect place to strive for my dreams.

Starting at Waikato as a mature student, I wanted to extend my knowledge of modern design and keep up with future trends. Studying Design at Waikato has taught me more about my different interests, as well as how to combine them in my design projects. While studying at Waikato, I have developed an interest in branding, packaging and web design.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

During my research I discovered that New Zealand stopped recycling batteries locally in 2003, as it had become unprofitable to sustain the plant. Today all batteries collected back are being shipped overseas to be recycled.

90% of batteries are recyclable, but many types of batteries are being stored at central depots in New Zealand until the minimum tonnage is met before shipping overseas for recycling, or recycling locally becomes financially viable in the future.

From research survey data, I found out that only 1% of New Zealand batteries are being collected back annually. I guess people find it inconvenient to recycle them and instead most batteries are being wrongfully disposed of in landfills. Components and chemicals inside batteries are highly toxic and can cause harm to the environment and the human body.

Thus, my project will be a campaign about the impact of batteries, the goal of the campaign is to educate the target audience about the environmental harm batteries can cause if not disposed of properly. My target audience will be teens aged 12-18.

I will be designing 7 infographics posters as my deliverables.
