BIOGRAPHY

Hi there! My name is Harry Ash, and I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Design majoring in Communication Design at the end of 2020. I am very excited to finish my studies at The University of Waikato and move out into the world!

While growing up and moving from England to New Zealand, I have always been interested in technology and computers. Upon graduating high school, I decided to pursue a creative career and graphic design seemed to be the perfect mix of computers and creativity. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying and learning about graphic design over the past three years. I have worked hard to get myself into the position of being able to graduate with a Bachelor Degree and have gained a great appreciation of graphic design along the way. Over the past three years I have found that my main areas of interest are branding and user experience (UX) design.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

New Zealand has a landfill problem, and the problem is not slowing down. The annual amount of waste disposed to landfills is projected to double within 10 years in Auckland alone. Every week, thousands of recyclable waste items get placed into the incorrect bins and accelerate the creation of landfills. Likewise, non-recyclable items get placed into recycle bins and slow down the recycling process.

Binmate is a mobile application prototype that aims to aid New Zealand’s landfill problem by helping people make the correct decisions regarding their bins. Binmate helps users by supplying critical bin and recycling information quickly and reliably. The user can scan a QR code located on a product or search for an item in the application and they will be notified as to which bin they should use to dispose of the item.

Upon scanning or searching for an item, the application will also suggest more sustainable alternative products. This will expose the user to more environmentally friendly products so they can make more sustainable decisions in the future.

Binmate aims to make recycling accessible and understandable for everyone while also encouraging more sustainable consumer decisions.
