BIOGRAPHY

Hello, I am Caleb Bond and I will soon graduate with a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Communication Design from the University of Waikato. Ever since I can remember I have been interested in design and the creative process, including graphic design. Through graphic design I was introduced to product design and architecture which led me to creating an industrial product of my own. Along with this I am a passionate Illustrator, and this is one of my strongest skills. I’ve been drawing ever since I was young, and I try to incorporate this skill into my designs wherever I can. In high school, my teacher helped me gain the awards of top design student and Scholarship design, inspiring me to explore the world of design further.

So far, I can say that I have really enjoyed my experience at Waikato University. I have learned and gained many skills that I have been able to apply to my own illustration business. I have always been the creative type, constantly thinking outside the box, especially when it comes to ideas. Design for me is definitely a wonderful thing, a special set of tools that I can now use to help bring joy and service to this world.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Travel. As humans we naturally want to move around and explore places, near and far. One type of transportation that I find interesting is public transportation.

There are multiple different vehicle types of public transportation in the market today, such as the Lime Scooter. When doing research into these types of transportation, I wondered how the current designs on the market could be improved. After some brainstorming and ideation, the project design and idea of ‘Orby’ came to mind. Orby is a new and improved mode of public transit which allows a driver to be encased in a medium sized sturdy glass orb-like bubble which has three wheels (one at the front and two at the back). The orb is attached at two different points to the frame which allows the sphere to rotate when turning, thus allowing less centripetal force. Because of this, the driver will experience a safer and more comfortable ride. Orby is still in a prototype stage of its development but it shows the key working parts. Overall, Orby is designed to better improve the public transportation within towns and cities that are condensed and compact.
