BCGD DEGREE SHOW 2016

Welcome to the website of the Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design, CGRD360 exhibition for 2016: "Flux". This site features information about the students in the paper and the projects they created for their final projects. This year we are experimenting with having a virtual exhibition instead of a physical exhibition.

The projects cover a wide range of media including web design & production, mobile design, interactive design, brand development, visual identity work, interactive installation, motion graphics, 3D animation, and more!

The CGRD360 paper provides an opportunity for students to plan, develop and carry out a small scale design project with relative independence. Students are encouraged to collaborate with peers in the learning environment, and with members of the professional design industry and/or academic community. Students work with assigned advisers to guide the student through their project. Typically this paper is part of the final semester of study for Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design students.

For more information about the exhibition contact degreeshow@waikato.ac.nz

- Interactive System

- Eye Tracking

- Promotional Campaign

The purpose of our project is to create a promotional tool that demonstrates the usage of eye tracking technology in a creative context via user interaction.

The project demonstrates an example of eye tracking technology used in a creative context in the form of a promotional tool. This promotional campaign is designed for an exhibition within a fictional osteological museum, Ostó. It demonstrates how one can easily implement eye tracking technology to further enhance the message and engage with user’s interaction.

The visuals convey an abstract form of incompletion that engages the user to find out more about what the museum is offering and to prompt the target audience to visit the museum for the full experience. Topographic lines have been incorporated into the design to suggest a relation to the earth and ground, alongside the skulls.

- Educational

Hello, I'm here to save the world! From unfortunate web design that is. My name is Kendra and I'm passionate about full stack web development. I'm also a self-taught novice game programmer, which I aim to have as a career in the future.

My degree project is a fun interactive virtual reality game that aims to reinforce graphic design principles in the minds of graphic design students. I worked with Joshua Laan to complete the game, which is controlled using a Leap Motion Sensor and an Oculus Rift headset. A program called Maya was used to create the 3D models, with Photoshop for textures, and functionality was achieved in Unreal Engine 4.

FACADE

- Typography

- Font

I am Georgia and I am interested in Typographic Design. I have chosen to base my project on a personal interest; the representation of past typographic forms and how they can change over time. I am also interested in other areas of Graphic Design such as Print and Publication design. This project reflects a little bit of both in the final solution.

Facade is known as  the ‘illusion of something’. It is a name that represents this project well as the inspiration was drawn mostly from Medieval typography. Facade represents the illusion of medieval typography in a simple, minimalistic design; focusing on curves and utilising them to its advantage as a unique typeface.

The typeface is intended for publication design as it is a Sans Serif Display type. Graphic Designers, Artists and Publishers alike may make use of the typeface.

- Colour Theory

From an early age I’ve had aspirations to be involved in the Gaming industry due to a love for and saturation in video games, towards this end I decided to study as a BCGD student at Waikato. This decision in turn helped nurture an interest in Graphic Design beyond just the scope of games, however eventually gaining a career as a Game Designer currently remains as my main goal.

My degree project is a team effort created alongside fellow student Shaun Farmer. We designed and built a VR (Virtual Reality) game level that aims to impart base Design concepts to potential new undergraduates of the BCGD, whilst also remaining a fun and immersive interactive experience for all players.

My name is Tom Davey and I am a third year BCGD student who has a passion for web and interface design. I have always wanted to create and illustrate my own story, and this course has given me the skills to do just that.

My project for the CGRD 360 paper is a digital interactive storybook that is inspired by the classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” publications where you take a character on an adventure, making various choices along the way which could benefit you or end badly. The story itself set in a dystopian future where a disaster has occurred and follows the path of a child journeying through this land, oblivious to what happened and its dangers. The style of the interface and pictures are influenced by computer game graphics of the 80’s and 90’s and is meant to invoke a sense of nostalgia.

- Colour Theory

I am a graphic designer with a strong interest in game design. I am looking into either going into the fields of video game advertisement or game design after graduation. Before the degree, BCGD was the obvious choice of study as it was a continuation of my favourite school subject of design. What wasn’t immediately obvious was how my passion of video games, corresponded very well the graphic design principles learned. Upon learning the game design tool of Unreal Engine 4, I could apply my knowledge of graphic design principles into game mechanics and level design.

The degree project is a team effort created alongside fellow student Isaac Cunnane. We designed and built a VR (Virtual Reality) game level that aims to impart base Graphic Design concepts to potential new undergraduates of the BCGD, whilst also remaining a fun and immersive interactive experience for all players.

I am a graduate of the University of Waikato, majored in Computer Graphic Design degree. I found myself interested in UI/UX design, and I try to express my understanding of user experience while designing websites for multiple devices. Branding and graphic design are also my strong points in my skillset which allows me to produce and deliver a comprehensive design piece

Origin is a visualization of a combination of illustrations according to the date of birth. It’s based on the Chinese zodiac signs with techniques from the Feng Shui theory to create a unique, personal tattoo. The tattoo illustrations display the day, month and year of the bearer’s birth, with added details based on the Chinese zodiac such as animals, the elements, shape, season, traits and day characters. The concept behind Origin is to express oneself with a personal tattoo that represents the user depending on their date of birth, by projecting onto the user's arm to reveal it using animations.

My name is Lara, and I love making things look good. I particularly enjoy web design and development, and print design. I hope to have a career in one or both of these areas.

For my degree project I have created a foundation named The Human Foundation. The Human Foundation makes educational resources for children, parents, and teachers, to teach them about intellectual disability and common conditions that can cause it.

The goal of The Human Foundation is to break down the barriers between people with intellectual disability and those without. People generally lack knowledge of intellectual disability and this leads to discrimination, bullying, and exclusion. The Human Foundation aim to stop this from happening by focusing on what makes us all the same, rather than what makes us different. I have designed the logo for the foundation, designed brochures for each of the conditions, written and illustrated two story books, and created a website.

Hello there! It is I Nikkole! I am a Graphic Designer with who can do a bit of everything. Photography, Video Production, Design, and everything else in between.

My project revolves around the idea of photography magazines not being able to showcase what photography is about. It’s all about the photos and how they should be seen as art, rather than glorifying the tools that are used to take them. To bridge the gap and to defy the ideology of print being a dead medium, the use of augmented reality technology is used to combat this. A mobile application can be used to better the experience of interacting with the magazine by scanning pages marked with a specific symbol to provide more information that would otherwise not be seen.

Giverny is a humanist geometric sans-serif typeface, designed in a single strong weight. It is comprised of uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals, punctuation and diacritic glyphs.

Type design’s rich and complex history was intriguing to me, I wanted to experience the process behind crafting these tools that graphic designers use. In doing so, I encountered a new way of thinking about type and the design process. Creating Giverny required rigorous refinements, a microscopic eye, and an immense understanding of unity.

The name Giverny reflects the whimsy, playfulness and charm of Monet’s garden; which I visited in my first year at the University of Waikato. Giverny is intended to have European feel, due to my personal fascination with the design cultures of countries such as France, Germany and The Netherlands.

Therefore, I thought what better way to make a meaningful publication than to help future students who will embark on the same journey I have, to get to where I am now at the end of my design degree showcasing my book design 'help'.

'Help' is a student handbook aimed at 17-19-year-old first year students entering the bcgd degree. It is filled with insightful information from students and lecturers with tips and tricks, advice and quotes. Additionally, it contains basic knowledge on both typography and design aspects. All of this to help students learn important design skills but also from past / present student's experiences and mistakes. All of which I wish I had given to me, hence the sole reason for creating this handbook.

Before taking this degree my biggest passions were print and branding design, but CGRD has shown me the world of web design, which was unexpectedly fun and interesting. For my degree project I wanted to incorporate web design to continue to challenge myself, and do something to help overwhelmed first year students like I once was, and thus the Design 101 project was born.

Design 101 is an interactive based website to aid students in the theory side of graphic design. Learning basic principles can easily be forgotten during first year, when students are bombarded with practical assignments. Design 101 aims to help students remember the theory side of things through interactive, and interesting examples. My research showed that interesting or novel typography, paired with interactivity and selective colour use can all help learners retain information more accurately and for a longer amount of time. My website takes these things into consideration to create an effective learning environment that will appeal to CGRD students.
